The Particulars: Alternatives to open surgery for abdominal aortic aneurysms (AAAs) are needed when adequate neck does not exist to allow for standard endovascular repair. Fenestrated endovascular repair (f-EVAR) could be a viable alternative for these patients.

Data Breakdown: A review of data from experienced institutions in the United Kingdom observed primary procedural success of 99% among 318 patients who underwent f-EVAR for AAA repair. Within 30 days of the procedure, re-intervention and mortality rates were 7.0% and 4.1%, respectively. Survival at 1, 2, and 3 years was 94%, 91%, and 89%, respectively.

Take Home Pearl: For AAAs, f-EVAR appears to be a technically and clinically successful alternative to open surgery.
