Swedish research suggests that bariatric surgery appears to be considerably more efficient in preventing type 2 diabetes in obese patients than usual care. In the study, bariatric surgery was associated with a type 2 diabetes incidence rate of 6.8 cases per 1,000 person-years, compared with 28.4 cases per 1,000 person-years with usual care.
