Among patients undergoing cardiac or orthopedic surgery, a bundled intervention consisting of Staphylococcus aureus screening, decolonization, and targeted prophylaxis appears to significantly decrease complex S aureus surgical site infections (SSIs). A study found that the rate of SSIs decreased from 36 per 10,000 operations to 21 per 10,000 operations following the intervention.
