Study investigators suggest that revisits following an index ED encounter appear to be more frequent than previously reported, due in part to many revisits occurring outside the index institution. Among adults in six states with ED visits from 2006 to 2010, slightly more than 8% had a revisit, 32% of which occurred at a different institution. Revisit rates varied by diagnosis and state. Revisit costs for the nearly 20% of patients in Florida with a revisit within 30 days were 118% of index ED visit costs.
