An AHRQ report indicates that 1% of the United States population accounted for 20.2% of total healthcare expenditures in 2008. The top 1% accounted for 21.8% of total expenditures in 2009. When ranked by expenditures, the lower 50% of the population accounted for 3.1% and 2.9% of total expenses in 2008 and 2009, respectively. When compared with the top decile of spenders, the lower half of spenders were more likely to report excellent health status.
