THURSDAY, March 17, 2016 (HealthDay News) — For patients undergoing toric intraocular lens insertion, visual outcomes are similar for femtosecond laser-assisted cataract surgery (LCS) and phacoemulsification cataract surgery (PCS), according to research published online March 6 in Clinical & Experimental Ophthalmology.
Carmen L. Oakley, M.B.B.S., from the Tasmanian Eye Institute in Australia, and colleagues examined the visual outcomes of femtosecond LCS versus PCS in 418 eyes from 323 patients undergoing toric intraocular lens insertion. The LCS group (323 eyes) underwent femtosecond laser pretreatment for the anterior capsulotomy and lens fragmentation.
The researchers found that 75.5 and 56.8 percent of LCS and PCS eyes, respectively, had a pre-operative best corrected visual acuity (BCVA) of 20/40 or better; the corresponding figures were 97.5 and 85.3 percent, respectively, for post-operative BCVA. No significant between-group difference was seen for change in BCVA or mean absolute refractive error.
“In patients receiving toric intraocular lenses, there is similar improvement in terms of letters gained with LCS and PCS,” the authors write. “Overall, there is no additional benefit for patients undergoing LCS in this cohort.”
