TUESDAY, July 10, 2018 (HealthDay News) — The American Medical Association (AMA) calls for inclusive family and medical leave policies to support lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer (LGBTQ) workers who care for relatives, spouses, and partners.

As part of the new policy, the AMA will advocate for Family and Medical Leave Act policies to include any individual related by blood or affinity whose close association with the employee is the equivalent of a family relationship. The association says there are clear health benefits when family and medical leave policies are inclusive of LGBTQ workers.

“Physicians understand the day-to-day challenges and rewards for individuals who are helping to care for a loved one who needs help,” AMA immediate past chair Patrice A. Harris, M.D., said in a statement. “The new AMA policy signals that physicians support the need and benefit of policies for family and medical leave that are inclusive of LGBTQ workers.”
