The 2025 annual meeting of the Peripheral Nerve Society (PNS) took place in Edinburgh, Scotland, from May 17 to May 20, 2025. At this year’s meeting, Charcot-Marie Tooth Disease (CMT) was featured in multiple sessions, including several consortiums and as part of a mini symposium.
Consortiums on CMT & Related Neuropathies
First, the disease was the focus of a consortium on Saturday, May 17. The consortium was held again on Sunday and Monday. Titled “Charcot-Marie Tooth & Related Neuropathies,” each consortium on this disease featured different speakers and topics.
Consortium #1
Saturday’s consortium started with an update on CMT disease activities. Following that, presenters discussed genetic testing in the clinical setting for CMT, as well as variant interpretation of the results. The first consortium on CMT at PNS 2025 concluded with a review of literature highlights on the disease from 2024 and 2025.
Consortium #2
Sunday’s consortium started with a discussion on real-life experiences using adeno-associated virus gene therapy for the treatment of neuromuscular diseases led by Francesco Muntoni, MD.
Platform presentations and a discussion of neddylation also took place during Saturday’s CMT consortium. Ashwin Woodhoo, PhD, led a talk titled “Neddylation: A Global Orchestrator of the Schwann Cell Myelination Molecular Network.”
Consortium #3
The final CMT consortium took place on Monday. Following a review of platform presentations on CMT and related neuropathies, Bill Newman, PhD, discussed “RCC1 Altered Nucleocytoplasmic Transport Results in an Infection-Induced Axonal Neuropathy.”
After a short break, Carol Whelan, MD, gave a talk titled “Endogenous and Synthetic Antibodies Against TTR Amyloid.” The consortium concluded with a final review of CMTR platform presentations.
CMT & Aging
Monday’s mini symposium included a discussion of CMT. Titled “Aging and Charcot-Marie-Tooth Disease: Understanding the Neuromuscular Junction’s Role in Disease Progression and Physical Decline,” the discussion featured several speakers, including W. David Arnold, MD; Ryan Castoro, DO; Jonathan Funke, BS; and Thomas Pedersen, PhD.
