Laparoscopic surgery appears to be safe and feasible as a first-line treatment for appendiceal abscesses when performed by experienced surgeons, according to a study. Readmission rates were 3% for patients who underwent laparoscopy and 27% for those assigned to conservative treatment. About 7% of the laparoscopy group required additional interventions, compared with a 13% rate for the conservative treatment group.
