The following is a summary of “Patient Satisfaction Following Phlebectomy for Prominent Temporal and Periorbital Facial Veins—Results From Our First Cohort of Patients,” published in the June 2025 issue of Journal of Cosmetic Dermatology by Muschamp et al.
Prominent veins in the temporal and periorbital facial areas were recognized as a cosmetic concern often treated by laser, sclerotherapy, or surgical phlebectomy, though patient satisfaction after phlebectomy had been scarcely studied.
Researchers conducted a retrospective study to evaluate patient satisfaction as an indicator of treatment efficacy in the initial cohort who underwent facial phlebectomy surgery.
They reviewed data from 22 individuals treated with facial phlebectomy for temporal and periorbital veins between June 2015 and October 2021. The procedure was performed using micro-incisions and hook phlebectomy under local anesthesia. Post-treatment outcomes were measured using a structured questionnaire that gathered qualitative feedback and quantitative ratings on a 5-point Likert scale (1 = worst, 5 = best).
The results showed that 13 of 22 individuals responded to the questionnaire, yielding a response rate of 59%, with 12 responses usable for analysis. The mean age of respondents was 45.4 years (range: 28–64), including 10 females and 2 males. Mean satisfaction scores were [3.8/5] for vein disappearance, [4.4/5] for scar appearance, [4.2/5] for overall satisfaction, and [4.1/5] for willingness to recommend. No reports of infection, numbness, ongoing pain, or major scarring were documented.
Investigators concluded that phlebectomy was a safe and effective approach for treating larger facial veins, with high satisfaction and minimal complications.
