Study investigators estimate that even a modest reduction in the proportion of emergency procedures performed for three conditions could save nearly $1 billion over 10 years in the United States. Adjusted average cost differences for emergency versus elective care were 30% higher for abdominal aortic aneurysm repairs, 17% higher for CABG surgery, and 53% for colon resections.
