The goal of this study was to offer a summary and discussion of recent experimental research, epidemiologic studies, and clinical trials on food and asthma. Researchers concentrate on dietary sources and antioxidant-rich vitamins. The current data does not support the use of vitamins A, C, E, or PUFAs to prevent or treat asthma or allergies. Current guidelines for prenatal folate usage to avoid neural tube abnormalities should be followed since there is no evidence that this practice has a significant impact on asthma or allergies. Consumption of a well-balanced diet high in antioxidants may aid in the primary prevention of asthma.

There is no consistent link between any of the vitamins or minerals studied and asthma or allergies. Further research into the impact of a vitamin or food on particular asthma phenotypes is needed in some situations. On the basis of available data, clinical studies of ‘whole diet’ treatments to prevent asthma are recommended.
