WEDNESDAY, Sept. 9, 2020 (HealthDay News) — The highest ethical and scientific standards will be followed in testing and manufacturing vaccines against the new coronavirus, the top executives of nine U.S. and European drug companies promise.

In the pledge issued Tuesday and meant to increase public confidence in any approved vaccines, the executives said they will make the well-being of those getting vaccinated their top priority, the Associated Press reported.

There are concerns that the U.S. Food and Drug Administration will yield to pressure from the Trump Administration to approve a vaccine before the completion of tests to prove it is safe and effective.

The pledge was signed by the chief executive officers of Johnson & Johnson, Merck, Moderna, Novavax, Pfizer, AstraZeneca, BioNTech, GlaxoSmithKline, and Sanofi. BioNTech has teamed with Pfizer on a vaccine now in the final stage of human testing, the AP reported.
