Endoscopic pancreatic function testing (ePFT) is one of the few techniques to directly identify exocrine pancreatic insufficiency, although there is still much misunderstanding over the test’s indications, usefulness, and interpretation. This position paper from the North American Society of Pediatric Gastroenterology, Hepatology, and Nutrition’s Pancreas Committee discusses the history and indications for ePFT in children. The study evaluated several approaches in current practice to assess their strengths and limitations, and gave recommendations on a methodology for doing ePFT in children based on data from children and adults. Finally, the study discusses areas where more study on ePFT in children is needed.
