The researchers did this research to describe the incidence and the characteristics of pregnancies complicated by hypertensive pregnancy disorders (HDP) in one of the largest maternity hospitals in Romania. The study is significant as it is observed that hypertensive pregnancy disorders are several other pregnancy complications.

This study was a  retrospective cohort study. The study was conducted, including all deliveries at ≥24 weeks’ gestation was performed. The emphasis was on the complications that were experienced by the women that included stillbirth, birthweight <10th percentile, birth <37 weeks’ gestation, and delivery by cesarean section.

The incidence of preeclampsia obtained after the analysis was 1.2%, of gestational hypertension 2.2%, and of chronic hypertension 0.4%. The findings suggested that the pregnancies with HDP had higher stillbirth rates, birthweight <10th percentile, birth <37 weeks’ gestation, and delivery by cesarean section.

The study concluded that the incidence of HDP in our population was relatively low and was associated with early gestational age and adverse perinatal outcomes.
