The following is a summary of “Implementation of a multidisciplinary medical-surgical consultation in hidradenitis suppurativa improves patient journey and time to surgery,” published in the May 2025 issue of Dermatology by García-Moronta et al.
Surgery had been a key component in treating hidradenitis suppurativa (HS), though integrating surgical and medical care often posed challenges due to the involvement of different specialists.
Researchers conducted a retrospective study to describe and evaluate the role of multidisciplinary medical-surgical consultations for individuals with HS.
They executed a cohort study to detail patient characteristics, evaluate referral reasons, review decisions from multidisciplinary consultations, and assess the impact on time to surgery and disease control.
The results showed that most patients referred to the multidisciplinary consultation were men with severe HS, with lesions primarily on the lower body. Surgery was recommended for 73.91% of patients. Medical treatment was adjusted in 30.43%, including initiation of new biologic drugs and targets (23.91%) or dosage changes (6.52%). After implementing the consultation, the waiting time for general surgery decreased significantly from 420.65 to 167 days.
Investigators concluded that multidisciplinary surgical consultations in HS improved patient care, optimized resources, and significantly reduced time for surgery.
