Here is the medical news to watch for May 17-23, 2021.

Cardiology

  • The American College of Cardiology (ACC) virtual meeting ends on May 17, but that last day will have sessions on original research in pediatric and congenital heart disease, mechanical support for heart failure and cardiomyopathies, and cardio-oncology. The last two late-breaking data sessions will include the results from 10 trials, including: Connect-HF, LIFE, GALACTIC-HF, and ISCHEMIA.
  • The EuroPCR 2021 meeting will take place virtually May 18-20. It will be broadcast live from 5 TV studios, with 10 worldwide PCR hubs taking turns to link up. Half the time will be set aside for interaction and live discussion. In addition, there will be videos on hot topics, the 14 finalists of the Got Talent competition, late-breaking trials, and more.

Gastroenterology: Digestive Disease Week (DDW) will take place virtually May 21-23. There is a track for you, whether you are interested in patient care, education, clinical research, basic research, training, or industry. There will be more than 300 sessions and more than 2,000 ePosters. Look for data on Axcella’s AXA-1665 for the reduction in risk of recurrent overt hepatic encephalopathy (OHE), Allakos’ lirentelimab (AK-002, a siglec-8 inhibitor) in eosinophilic esophagitis and gastroenteritis, and more.

Gene therapy: The Advanced Therapies Congress, which is focused on advanced therapy medicinal products (ATMPs) – i.e., gene therapies, cell therapies, tissue therapies, and some medical devices – will take place virtually May 19-21. You will learn about clinical progress in BCMA-targeted immunotherapy, where the ATMP field is headed, what’s next after CAR T and gene therapy, the rise of allogeneic approaches, strategies for CAR T-cell combination immunotherapy for solid tumors, next-generation cell therapies, and much more. There is also going to be a two-day in-person meeting in London October 5-6, 2021.

Pulmonology: The American Thoracic Society (ATS) International Conference continues through May 19. Among the sessions of interest: breaking trial results in pulmonary medicine, advances in pulmonary hypertension, investigations in air pollution, updates on asthma management, inhaled steroids for mild asthma, checkpoint inhibitor-induced pneumonitis, sleep-related hypoxemia, advances in asthma therapy, and much, much more.

Regulatory news

  • The House Committee on Oversight and Reform will grill AbbVie CEO Richard Gonzalez on May 18 about his company’s pricing and marketing practices related to deals/efforts to protect Humira (adalimumab) from generic competition.
  • The Food and Drug Law Institute (FDLI) virtual meeting will take place May 18-20. The long list of FDA officials who will outline the Agency’s strategic priorities and new initiatives include: Acting FDA Commissioner Janet Woodcock, MD; Peter Marks, MD, PhD, director of the FDA’s Center for Biologics Evaluation and Research (CBER); Jeffrey Shuren, MD, JD, director of the FDA’s Center for Devices and Radiological Health (CDRH); and Mark Raza, the FDA’s Acting Chief Counsel. If you are interested in regulatory issues, this is a must-attend conference.
  • On May 18-19, the FDA will host a public web conference to offer a progress update on the ICH E6 guideline for good clinical practice.
  • The FDA is hosting a virtual public meeting May 18-19 on potential medication error risks with investigational drug container labels.
  • On May 21, the FDA is hosting a webinar on its technical rejection criteria (TRC) for drugs submitted to the Agency.
