TUESDAY, May 16, 2017 (HealthDay News) — Multiple-site same-day cryolipolysis of the lower abdomen and flanks is safe and well tolerated for reduction of subcutaneous fat, according to a study published online May 2 in Lasers in Surgery and Medicine.
Kenneth B. Klein, M.D., from Endpoint LLC in Bainbridge Island, Wash., and colleagues assessed safety in 35 adult males and females who underwent same-day cryolipolysis of the lower abdomen and flanks for reduction of subcutaneous fat. Before treatment and at one, four, and 12 weeks after treatment, the authors measured serum lipids and liver tests. Immediately after treatment and at the 12-week follow-up visit, expected treatment side effects were assessed.
The researchers found that the procedures were well tolerated, with the expected treatment effects mild or moderate in general, and resolved without intervention. No clinically meaningful changes were seen from baseline to any subsequent time point in any serum lipid test; the same was true for liver tests. No treatment-related adverse events were seen.
“Multiple cycle, same-day cryolipolysis treatment of the lower abdomen and both flanks is well tolerated and safe,” the authors write. “It does not lead to changes in serum lipids or liver tests at any of the measured time points following the procedure.”
Two authors disclosed financial ties to ZELTIQ Aesthetics, which markets the CoolSculpting System used in the study.
