The following is a summary of “Efficacy in Clinical Studies of a Skin Care Serum Formula Containing 7 Short and Long Saccharides and Bacterial Fractions to Repair and Strengthen the Skin Barrier From Aggressions in Intense Conditions,” published in the May 2025 issue of Journal of Cosmetic Dermatology by Pichon et al.
A healthy skin barrier was understood to be essential for protection against the entry of harmful substances, and the loss of internal fluids, particularly water and electrolytes, and various aggressions were known to weaken it.
Researchers conducted a retrospective study to examine the effects of single or repeated applications of a serum formula on skin barrier recovery following exposure to three distinct external aggressions, including 1 cumulative under intense conditions.
They performed 5 single-blind, controlled, intra-individual clinical trials in healthy participants to assess the effects of a serum formula compared to untreated skin. Each study examined skin response after exposure to different aggressions, including harsh cleanser, emery paper abrasion, or tape stripping, followed by cold (4° C) or heat (40° C) conditions. Skin barrier function was measured through trans epidermal water loss (TEWL) and skin pH evaluation.
The results showed that after harsh cleanser aggression, serum application led to significant improvements in TEWL and pH recovery compared to untreated control, indicating faster skin barrier restoration. Following tape stripping combined with extreme cold (4° C) or heat (40° C), serum-treated areas demonstrated significantly quicker recovery of barrier function. Serum application also enhanced resistance to abrasion compared to untreated skin.
Investigators concluded that the serum formula, containing a specific combination of saccharides and bacterial fractions, aided in repairing and strengthening the skin barrier to protect against abrasion, and the studies demonstrated improved skin barrier recovery following exposure to various types of aggression.
