Social media platforms may supply information about concerns related to pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP), according to findings published in AIDS. Researchers examined how artificial intelligence (AI) can enhance infodemiology, which distributes and scans information in the electronic medium, to process social media posts about PrEP. Of 135 citations screened, eight infodemiology studies were found that examined more than 58.9 million posts. These studies identified multiple areas of focus: PrEP topics often discussed in communities (eg, barriers to uptake); rumors that may raise concerns (eg, PrEP is a method for preventing COVID-19 infection); and geographic areas in which concerns about risk for HIV were raised (eg, most HIV-related posts originated in the 10 states with the most new HIV diagnoses). In summary, researchers wrote, “our review suggests social media posts may provide information on real-time PrEP-related concerns, and AI can accelerate and enhance the processing of mass data to identify the information that communities need and the areas/locations that may need HIV prevention intervention.”
