Combined use of functional endoscopic sinus surgery (FESS) and selective vidian neurectomy provides symptom relief for patients with allergic rhinitis (AR) and chronic rhinosinusitis (CRS) with nasal polyps (ARwCRSwNP), including those with comorbid asthma, according to findings published in the Journal of the Formosan Medical Association. Researchers examined long-term outcomes in 56 patients with ARwCRSwNP, including 27 with asthma, who were divided into Group A (FESS with selective vidian neurectomy) or Group B/control (FESS alone). After 3 years, both groups demonstrated significant improvements in symptoms and quality of life compared with the preoperative period (P<0.01). Patients with CRS who had high tissue eosinophilic inflammation had less disease control than those with controlled or partly controlled disease (P<0.05). Patients in Group A experienced better outcomes in terms of nasal itching and sneezing versus Group B. Overall, CRS control was comparable between groups, though group A exhibited better CRS control in patients with asthma (P<0.05).
