A recent study examined low PrEP uptake among Latina cisgender women in New York City despite provider indication. For the study, which was published online in AIDS Care, interviews explored social determinants, sexual behaviors, and PrEP barriers. Sahnah Lim, PhD, MPH, and colleagues identified themes that included structural factors like employment, partner-related issues, low sexual health knowledge, and resilience. Partner infidelity motivated PrEP initiation, according to the study. Despite relational power imbalances, women empowered themselves. Gender inequity influenced decision-making, emphasizing partner-driven HIV risk and gender norms. The study highlights the need to address these factors to improve PrEP uptake among Latinx populations.
