WEDNESDAY, June 2, 2021 (HealthDay News) — China’s Sinovac COVID-19 vaccine has been approved for use in adults 18 years and older, the World Health Organization says.

The agency’s emergency use authorization of a second vaccine from China is based on data showing that two doses of Sinovac were about 50 percent effective in preventing symptoms of COVID-19, the Associated Press reported.

A study published in April by Brazilian scientists confirmed a previously reported efficacy rate of more than 50 percent for Sinovac, while a real-world study in Chile in April showed an efficacy rate of 67 percent.

Last month, WHO approved the COVID-19 vaccine by Sinopharm of China, and has also approved vaccines from Pfizer-BioNTech, AstraZeneca, Moderna, and Johnson & Johnson, the AP reported.
