For a study, researchers offered a preliminary strategy for anticipating medical occurrences to assess the medical supply needs of a wilderness trip. This method’s performance was assessed using data from the 2017 Equal Playing Field (EPF) expedition to Mount Kilimanjaro.

About 8 reports on medical occurrences that occurred during outdoor missions were evaluated. Incidence data were combined into a single dataset, and an adventure race expeditions (ARS) subset was produced. The cumulative incidence of medical occurrences for the 9-day EPF mission was then forecasted. The medical supply list was created using the indication. Regression analysis was used to assess the ability of the whole dataset and ARS to predict the cumulative incidence of medical occurrences by category during the EPF trip. 

The ARS predicted a greater rate of medical occurrences than the complete dataset but overestimated the rate of EPF expeditions. The whole dataset was a poor predictor of the cumulative incidence of medical occurrences by category during the EPF expedition, but the ARS was an excellent predictor. All nonreusable materials were overestimated in the final medical kit.

The method’s medical kit controlled all medical incidents in the field. The research highlighted the potential benefit of designing a medical kit for wilderness adventures using a personalized, evidence-based approach.
