Awareness of comorbidities associated with AD is important for clinicians, though additional research is needed to establish if screening or management of comorbidities is beneficial for adults with AD, according to results published in Journal of the American Academy of Dermatology. Dawn Davis, MD, and colleagues performed a systematic review of the link between AD and certain comorbidities. The analysis produced 32 statements, with strong evidence for the link between AD in adults and certain allergic, atopic, immunemediated, mental health, and bone health conditions, as well as skin infections. Some evidence supports a connection between AD and substance use, ADHD, and aspects of metabolic syndrome; other evidence suggests a modest association with several cardiovascular conditions. The association between AD and autism spectrum disorders, myocardial infarction, stroke, and metabolic syndrome was inconclusive.
