Asthma outcomes are impacted by elements at several ecological levels, including the individual and his or her family, the house, medical treatment, and the community. This systematic review discusses newly reported single-level and multilayer behavioral treatments for improving asthma outcomes. Six of the 23 title/abstracts examined in the original systematic search of PubMed, Ovid, Scopus, PsychINFO, and CIHAHL reference review databases fulfilled inclusion criteria. Five of the research concentrated on low-income and/or minority groups. Culturally customized online asthma self-management programs and family-centered asthma education provided at the bedside during hospitalization for an acute asthma exacerbation are promising treatments.
Culturally customized online self-management programs provide asthma assistance to hard-to-reach populations at the time and pace that is most suitable for the individual user. Family-focused asthma education provided at the bedside by highly motivated lay volunteers during an acute asthma hospitalization is an effective and low-cost way to enhance pediatric asthma self-management.
