For patients with HF, homebased palliative care reduced risk for in-hospital death, according to a study published in CMAJ. Kieran L. Quinn, MD, PhD, and colleagues examined whether collaborative palliative care was associated with the likelihood of patients dying at home versus in a hospital. The 245 patients who received homebased palliative care had a lower risk for in-hospital death (relative risk, 52%) compared with 1,172 matched patients who received usual care; 41.2% and 78.2% of patients, respectively, died in the hospital. Shorter hospital stays and more days at home were added benefits.
