Among ED patients with sepsis who progress to septic shock between 4 and 48 hours of arrival, special consideration should be given to those with certain characteristics, according to a study. Predictors included:

  • Female gender (odds ratio [OR], 1.59).
  • Non-persistent hypotension (OR, 6.24).
  • Bandemia at least 10% (OR, 2.60).
  • Lactate of at least 4.0 mmol/L (OR, 5.30).
  • History of coronary artery disease (OR, 2.01).
