At 6 months, a smartphone-based asthma self-management app improved asthma control and QOL among patients with asthma compared to usual care alone. To assess the impact of a smartphone asthma app on asthma control and QOL, Mehrdad Farzandipour, MD, and colleagues conducted a single-blind, controlled trial that randomized patients to an intervention or control group. Although both groups showed improved asthma control and QOL at 3 and 6 months compared to baseline, the intervention group showed significantly greater improvement compared to patients in the control group (P<0.05). Additionally, the researchers performed the Asthma Control Test and Asthma Quality of Life Questionnaire-Mark, which showed that between both groups, only patients in the intervention group showed statistically significant improvement in QOL and asthma control (P<0.001). The results of the study published in Respiratory Medicine suggest that technological advances and increased smartphone access may be a reliable, cost-effective tool in asthma management.
