The following is a summary of “Analysis of the capsular bend in posterior capsular opacification using anterior segment optical coherence tomography,” published in the October 2023 issue of Opthalmology by Deen et al.
Researchers started a retrospective study to investigate the relationship between the capsular bend and the morphological types and characteristics of posterior capsular opacification (PCO) using anterior segment optical coherence tomography (AS-OCT).
They examined 30 eyes with PCO and identified three PCO types: pearl, fibrosis, and mixed. The assessment included anterior capsular overlap, intraocular lens-capsule adhesion, and capsular bending. In addition, the PCO parameters of area, density, and score were recorded at the 6-, 5-, and 3-mm intraocular lens optic regions, along with the intraocular lens-posterior capsule distance and capsule bending angle (CBA). Studies were conducted to explore the connections between capsular bend and PCO type and characteristics. A control group of 12 eyes without PCO was used to compare the study variables.
The results showed statistically some differences in the mean PCO area and score at the 6-, 5-, and 3-mm optic zones among various PCO types (P>0.001). The pearl type exhibited the highest values, followed by the mixed type and the fibrosis type. The PCO group displayed a notably higher mean CBA than the control group (P=0.001). CBA positively correlated with intraocular lens-posterior capsule distance, PCO area, and PCO score at the 6-, 5-, and 3-mm zones (P=0.001). The CBA cut-off point, as per the receiver operating characteristic curve, was 96.85° when distinguishing PCO cases from controls. PCO eyes showed more partial overlap and incomplete adhesion than control eyes. (P=0.001, 0.003, respectively).
They concluded that PCO types and CBA are strongly associated with PCO, with a CBA cut-off of 96.85° in PCO eyes.
